We decided to move our dining table into the living room to create a faux dining room. In it's place, I wanted a small table and two chairs for quick breakfasts and such...not wanting to drop a ton of dough, I found the table at the Crate&Barrel Outlet in Berkeley and the chairs from Ikea in E-ville. Jonee says it looks rather "swedish cafeteria" but I think it will look super nice with some fun curtains.

It's hard to find a super decorated street these days...but last night I chanced upon 4th street in Berkeley. This lovely video reminds me of my husband. When we aren't running around on the weekend,

or busy trying to steal some bacon. I love hearing about lazy morning routines, especially Jill and Tommy's.

Having only ever rolled around on regular skateboards I always thought longboarding was goofy{get it? haha} but this

Wedding Hair.

The thing about wedding hair...you want it to be okay after many drinks, possible wind storms, and lots of intense dance moves involving high-kicks and lyrical interpretations of "Take On Me"...in short: hair must be SOLID. No, not tap-tap-tap lacquered dried gel solid...but you know, firmly placed bobby-pinned, wispspsps-catching solid. Hence my idea to add a french braid to this side-chignon.

Big UPs to my sweet cousin Meredith, who has taken upon this task! We did the dry-run today. She nailed it out of the park...my cheap H&M flowers work well too, as will my (removable yet to be completed) birdcage veil....as will my high-kicks, and drunken dance stylings...see photos below? This is post-MASSIVE-Dublin wind! Waiting on a bart platform in Dublin, is akin to hugging an Altamont Pass windmill. Huzzah for solid wedding hair! P.S. it doesn't hurt, too. (Ponytails give me headaches...insert wimpy "sucks at being a girl" realization here.)

Sunday Morning Movie: American Look.

The definitive Populuxe film on 1950s automotive, industrial, interior and architectural design. This Chevrolet-sponsored film is dedicated to the "stylists of America" -- the "men and women of taste and imagination" who have the "courage to dream". It has two principal goals: 1) convince the viewer that style is more important than substance (a concept that was one of the linchpins of America's booming fifties economy); and 2) showcase the delta-wing rear-finned 1959 Impala. This hidden agenda in no way detracts from the beauty of the film, certainly one of the most striking industrials ever made.

We are shown a parade of fifties products -- lovingly lit and inventively photographed -- and then we're shown the interior of the G.M. Technical Design Center (Warren, Michigan), where we see some of the most bizarre cars in automotive history being designed by men in dull Brooks Brothers suits. Arguably, this art director's wet dream is too in love with a design period that might better off be forgotten. But if you're into fifties atomic age minimalism, this is the film you've waited your entire life to see. Watch for the cameo by Harley Earl's '54 Firebird jet car near the end.

Recently realizing I am fairly adept at making fantastic breakfast...I've also become slightly jaded with eating breakfast out...the lines, the wait, the cold potatoes....which brings me face to face with my current obsession with home-made breakfasts. It's become a ritual in our home on Saturdays and Sundays to not only enjoy extra long snuggles with the kittums in our cozy'n'cute apartment, but to enjoy my breakfasting creations. I don't know if you've seen the BBC series "The Trip" yet, but I keep thinking to a scene wherein Seve Coogan remarks upon how delicious his simple English fried breakfast is, while seeming utterly uninterested in most of the Michelin starred cuisine he eats throughout the rest of the series. Simple food, brings simple joy. You can imagine my delight upon discovering one of my favorite blogger's new blog titled, quaintly enough, BREAKFASTS. The image above is my favorite so far, do take a peek.

onee and I went to see the Nutcracker Ballet on a rainy Tuesday evening. It was family night, brimming with kidlins dressed to the nines. My favorite part...when the three year old girl, in the seat in front of Jonee, started emulating the Sugar-plum Fairy in her seat. Oh, memories! Afterwards, we walked up to Max's and got amazing jewish sandwiches and beer. A very Christmas-y San Francisco evening indeed!

P.S. How adorbs is City Hall right now? I love downtown living!

Winter Coats, A Love Story

I recently watched Love Story...not only did I adore the movie, but found myself screen-shotting about every 5 minutes.
The coats Ali MacGraw wore in that movie...slayed me. Absolutely SLAYED me. I didn't snap the sailor jacket...but the belted camel high-collared number, with matching camel knit gloves...or the creamy white split-back coat with the fuzzy fur cap....swoon.

I bought a fur cap in honor. Sadly they just don't make coats like this any more. Especially with such lovely high collars....

Hoover Dam

This past weekend, Jonee and I jotted down to Boulder City to meet up with his Grandpa + his lovely wife Nancy.
We stayed at the infamous Railroad Pass Casino Hotel, which, if you might be interested to know, is not at the address it says it is (i.e. do not rely on your GPS if you're driving there...long story.) We had tons of fun getting to know eachother over dollar strawberry shortcake, and dollar amber bock. We even ventured down to the strip for lunch at the Belaggio.

On our second day, Jonee and I scooted off to visit the Hoover Dam.
I really dug the 1930's aesthetic and was quite pleased with that the new bridge nearby was designed to harmonize with the clean art deco look of the dam.

P.S. how cute is this picture? (It looks like treebeard photobombed.)

My Dad had brought us a pie once, and left his dish.
I promised to return it full of pie on our next visit.
Went on and on about my favorite Vodka Crust recipe from Cooks Illustrated...but I totally cheated.
This is a cheater pie.

You see, I had this Perfect Pie Crust mix from Williams-Sonoma, and a Berry filling in a jar (also from WS) just begging to be used.
And having spent the rainy afternoon at the Berlin film festival, then shopping down Market Street, a cheater pie is all I was up for! AND on top of that I used my pie shape cutters to form my crust...not embellish my crust.

Cheat.
Cheat.
Cheat.

The tools of my trickery....the dough was a little dry and hard to roll out. The cutter definitely saved the day...and in a very pretty way. I will have to work hard at making myself roll out my top crusts, knowing how easy this makes it!

This is the baked crust....looks rather pretty, right?
Hopefully it'll taste lovely too~

Dessert Table Style

When I described to my Grandmother, my concept for a "bake-sale table" for dessert at le wedding...she got a little bummed until I clarified that I wanted a dessert table...rather than a simple cake, or a singular kind of dessert. I want it to be home-baked in goodness, and varied in type of dessert....however I want it to look super pretty and rather orchestrated. A fine-line between styled and homey.....luckily I work with incredibly savvy folks, and a lovely gal at work introduced me to the website of the famed dessert table stylist Amy Atlas! A very lovely place for dessert table inspiration!

Botanical Inspiration

So, Jonee and I were enjoying some delicious salted organic peanuts the other night, when I realized I didn't know if Peanuts came from a tree, or a bush, or what-have-you...so we looked it up on the interweb...and found the pretty little illustration up above.

I love Botanical Illustrations to bits...and finding this one, reminded me of a gorgeous article on Victorian Styled Botanical-inspired recipes in the latest Martha Stewart Living....I'm thinking of doing this for Thanksgiving.

FUNGUS TART

Ingredients
Serves 8 to 10

* 1 disk Pate Brisee
* All-purpose flour, for surface
* 7 large shiitake mushrooms, stems trimmed
* 2 spring onions or scallions
* 1 Trumpet Royale mushroom
* 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
* Salt
* 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
* 1 fennel bulb, chopped, fronds reserved
* 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
* 1/4 cup sour cream
* 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese (1/2 ounce)
* 1 large egg
* 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
* 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, with a rack in middle, and another just below it. Turn out pate brisee onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out dough into a 10-by-13-inch rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Press dough into bottom and up sides of an 8-by-11-inch rectangular tart pan with a removable bottom. Using a paring knife, trim excess dough from sides. Transfer to freezer, and chill for 20 minutes.
2. Prick bottom of tart shell all over with a fork, line with parchment paper, and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake on middle rack until edges are just beginning to turn golden brown, about 25 minutes. Remove parchment and pie weights. Bake until bottom of tart shell is golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely before filling.
3. Meanwhile, slice 2 shiitake mushrooms, 1 onion, and the Trumpet Royale mushroom 1/4 inch thick. Transfer sliced mushrooms and onion to a baking sheet; drizzle with oil and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Roast on bottom rack until golden brown and tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
4. Chop remaining onion (white part only). Heat butter in medium high-sided skillet over medium heat. Cook onion and chopped fennel, stirring frequently, until onion starts to caramelize, about 15 minutes; season with salt. Chop remaining 5 shiitake mushrooms, and add to skillet. Cook until mushrooms release their juice and the mixture is soft and caramelized, 5 to 7 minutes. Let cool. Puree mixture in a food processor until smooth; transfer to a bowl.
5. Puree cream cheese, sour cream, Parmesan, egg, nutmeg, pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a clean food processor until smooth. Spread fennel-mushroom puree over bottom of tart shell. Gently spread cream cheese filling over top of puree, making sure they don't blend together. Arrange roasted mushrooms and onion on top, and scatter a few fennel fronds over tart. Transfer tart pan to a baking sheet, and bake until filling is set and crust is slightly puffed but not golden, 22 to 24 minutes. Let cool.

I'm actually not a fan of cake...I love how they look...but I tend to be rather picky...so we opted for a bake-sale styled dessert table with lots of home-made treats. My only reservation was not being able to use a cute cake-topper or to have something to cut and squish into Jonee's gorgeous face.

Luckily, it turns out that I have a wonderful connection to a very talented baker, and she has agreed to make us a peanut butter pound cake for a small wedding cake! What a great way to follow delicious BBQ, non?

Anyway...I really love the little flags, minimalist cake-stands, and glass cloche in the image up above. I think that would work mighty fine with some cute black and white paper.

Bistro saucers served a duel purpose in the pre-ban absinthe era. Besides serving as a coaster, they also functioned to indicate the price of absinthe being served. The price was written on the inside rim or bottom of the saucer and was use to advise the customer of the price of his absinthe. The money was generally left inside the coaster itself.
